A sale price isn't the same as the cheapest price

Every Canadian retailer runs diaper promotions — "20% off," "buy 2 save $5," a flyer flash sale. The problem is that a discount tells you nothing about whether the final price is actually good. A 20%-off box that started overpriced can still cost more per diaper than a box that's never on sale anywhere.

The only number that means anything is price per diaper: the total price divided by the count in the box. It's the same logic as unit pricing on grocery shelves, and it's the only fair way to compare a 32-count box at one store against a 96-count box at another.

Why pack size wrecks most price comparisons

Retailers deliberately sell diapers in different pack sizes, which makes side-by-side sticker prices useless. A $14.99 box of 32 and a $34.99 box of 84 look like completely different price points until you do the division: $0.47/diaper versus $0.42/diaper. The bigger box, which looks more expensive on the shelf, is actually the better deal.

This is exactly why we built the comparison tool on this site — it does that division automatically across every retailer and brand we track, so you're comparing apples to apples instead of guessing.

Where to actually check

Right now we track Size 3 diapers (the size most babies spend the longest stretch in) across Amazon.ca, Costco Canada, Walmart Canada, Real Canadian Superstore, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Well.ca. A few things worth knowing about each:

  • Costco Canada tends to win on price per diaper thanks to bulk packaging, but only pays off if the annual membership fee is covered by what you'd actually save — see our Costco vs Amazon breakdown for the math.
  • Amazon.ca is usually the most convenient for smaller households, especially with Subscribe & Save discounts stacked on top of the listed price.
  • Walmart Canada, Real Canadian Superstore, and Shoppers Drug Mart are worth checking during flyer weeks, when a specific brand can briefly undercut its usual price.
  • Well.ca occasionally beats everyone on eco/premium brands that aren't discounted elsewhere.

Prices shift daily, so a "cheapest right now" list would be out of date within hours. Instead, use the live comparison tool below — it's sorted by price per diaper by default, so the top result is the best deal at this exact moment.
